The WBC Belt Explained by a Belt Maker: What It Means, Is It Real Gold, and Can You Buy One?

Green WBC belt replica with hand painted world flags and gold plated side plates on a workbench in Sialkot

The WBC belt, the green one with a ring of tiny flags, is the title belt buyers ask our workshop about more than any other. We’ve built championship belts in Sialkot, Pakistan, for more than 20 years, and the WBC style is our most requested replica.

Below, we cover what the WBC belt means, how its design has changed, and who holds it right now. Then we open up what it’s actually made of, and give you a straight answer on buying one.

Key Takeaways

  • It marks a world champion. The World Boxing Council awards the WBC belt to its champion in one weight class.
  • No single fighter holds it. The WBC crowns a separate champion in each of its 18 men’s and 16 women’s divisions.
  • The standard belt isn’t solid gold. Real gold and gems appear only on rare one off belts made for mega fights.
  • You can’t buy the title, but you can buy a replica. The WBC licenses an official replica, and workshops like ours make unlicensed WBC style versions.

What Does the WBC Belt Mean in Boxing?

The WBC boxing belt shows that a fighter is the World Boxing Council’s world champion in one weight class. You earn it by winning a title fight that the WBC has approved, called a sanctioned fight.

The WBC started in Mexico City on February 14, 1963. It’s one of boxing’s four major sanctioning bodies. These groups rank fighters, approve title fights, and hand out belts.

Every WBC world title belt looks the same, whatever the weight class. The heavyweight champion and the flyweight champion wear the same green and gold design.

How the Green Belt Compares to the WBA, IBF, and WBO Titles

Each of the four major bodies runs its own rankings and awards its own belt. A fighter who holds all four belts in one division at the same time is the undisputed champion.

WBA (World Boxing Association)1921, as the National Boxing AssociationThe oldest of the four

IBF (International Boxing Federation)1983Red strap
WBO (World Boxing Organization)1988The youngest of the four

Why Is the WBC Title Belt Green?

The WBC says the green stands for every boxer’s hope of rising up through the sport. It also links the color to boxing’s energy and constant growth.

The green and gold look dates back to 1976. That year, the WBC unveiled a new belt designed by José Sulaimán and Piero Pini, the first in its Adidas line.

How the Green Belt Has Changed Over Six Generations

The WBC belt has gone through six designs, and each generation added more detail. The biggest jump came in 2000, when the flags around the center plate grew to three rows.

GenerationIntroducedWhat changedChampions who wore it
1stThe WBC’s early yearsA silver plate on a black velvet sashMuhammad Ali, George Foreman, José Nápoles, Miguel Canto
2nd1976The first green and gold design, by José Sulaimán and Piero PiniLarry Holmes, Sugar Ray Leonard, Carlos Zárate, Alexis Argüello
3rdNot stated by the WBCTwo rows of flags, plus medals of Muhammad Ali and Joe Louis joined by small chainsJulio César Chávez, Mike Tyson, Ricardo López
4th2000Three rows of flags for the 165 member countries at the time; four ceramics replaced the medals and chainsFloyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao, Juan Manuel Márquez
5thNot stated by the WBCThree ceramics on each side: José Sulaimán, Floyd Mayweather, and the current division champion on one side; Muhammad Ali and two division legends on the otherRecent champions
6thCurrentFlags of every United Nations member, plus Puerto Rico, the Vatican, and PalestineToday’s champions

That’s why flag counts differ so much online. One source lists 161 member countries, the 2000 belt showed 165, and today’s belt carries the 193 UN members plus three more. The right number depends on the generation.

This matters if you’re ordering a replica. Tell your maker which generation you want, because the flag rows and side plates change from one to the next.

Who Currently Holds the WBC Belt?

No single fighter holds the WBC belt. The WBC crowns a separate world champion in each weight class: 18 for men and 16 for women.

As of October 22, 2026, the WBC lists these champions, among others:

  • Heavyweight: Agit Kabayel
  • Welterweight: Ryan Garcia
  • Super bantamweight: Naoya Inoue
  • Women’s heavyweight and middleweight: Claressa Shields

Titles change hands often, and some sit vacant. The light heavyweight title, for example, was vacant ahead of Joshua Buatsi vs. Willy Hutchinson on November 7, 2026.

Do Boxers Keep Their Belt After They Lose?

Yes. Champions keep the belt they won, even after they lose the title. The WBC makes a new belt for each new champion.

Is the WBC Belt Real Gold?

No. The standard WBC title belt isn’t solid gold. The WBC describes it as green with gold details, and an auction house listed an unissued official belt with a brass center plate.

Real gold shows up on the WBC’s special one off belts. The WBC makes these for single mega fights, and they’re showpieces, not the belt a new champion normally gets.

What a Real Gold WBC Style Belt Would Cost to Make

Our WBC style plates use gold plating, not solid gold. We can arrange real gold plating through an outside plater from about $130 extra, though we can’t guarantee that plater’s work.

On our $200 mold cast belt, that puts a real gold plated version at roughly $330 before shipping. So when a seller offers a “real gold WBC belt” at normal replica prices, don’t believe it.

What Goes Into a WBC Style Belt in Our Sialkot Workshop

A WBC style belt is our most detailed replica, and the flags are the reason. We paint every one by hand.

Here’s what goes into each belt:

  • Plates: We make them two ways. Mold casting shapes each plate in a mold, which gives raised, 3D detail. Etching marks the design into a flat brass sheet, which costs less but sits flatter.
  • Flags: Hand painted, one by one, around the center plate.
  • Side plates: 4, 6, or 8, depending on the design.
  • Strap: Artificial leather in WBC green, 48 inches or longer.
  • Closure: A metal buckle.
  • Finish: Gold plating over the metal. Plating lasts months to years, and humidity wears it down fastest.
  • Weight: 1.5 kg (about 3.3 lb) or more.
  • Stones: Usually none on our WBC style.

To see how each of these parts works, read our breakdown of every part of a championship belt.

The flag ring takes the most time on any WBC style belt we build, and it’s why this style costs more.

Why a WBC Style Belt Costs More Than Our Other Replicas

Our full size replica boxing belts start at $150. A mold cast WBC style belt costs $200, and an etched brass version starts at $170, depending on the design.

The extra cost is labor. Painting a ring of tiny flags by hand takes far longer than finishing a plain plate, and extra side plates mean more casting and plating. For every price level, see what your money actually buys in a championship belt.

Can You Buy a WBC Belt?

You can’t buy the actual WBC belt a champion wins. The WBC awards its world title belt to champions, and it doesn’t sell them. What you can buy is a replica, either licensed or unlicensed, like our full size replica title belts.

Licensed vs. Unlicensed WBC Replicas: What the Difference Means

The WBC’s licensed replica comes from Cleto Reyes, the Mexican boxing equipment brand. The two spent more than seven years developing it, and Cleto Reyes makes it by hand in Mexico.

Other WBC style replicas, including ours, are unlicensed. Unlicensed means the WBC didn’t approve it, not that it’s poorly made.

How to Spot a Cheap WBC Replica Before You Pay

Most cheap replicas look fine in a listing photo. The problems show up when you hold one. Use this checklist before you pay:

  1. Check the lettering. On cheap belts, the words sit flat instead of raised. They pass in a photo but look poor up close.
  2. Ask for a closeup of the flags. Smudged or blurry flags point to rushed painting or a cheap print.
  3. Ask what the strap is made of. Get the seller to say in writing whether it’s genuine or artificial leather.
  4. Ask for the weight. A full size belt should weigh at least 1.5 kg (3.3 lb). A much lighter belt usually means thin plates.
  5. Walk away from “real gold” claims. Real gold can’t sell at replica prices.
  6. Treat “exact replica” as a sales line. Expect small differences in plate detail, flag count, and strap color on any unlicensed belt.
  7. Ask for a photo and video of your actual belt. We send every buyer both, with their name and the date written on paper beside the belt, before they pay anything.

A few buyers still expect real gold when they first message us. The photo and video settle that before any money changes hands.

WBC Inspired Custom Belts for Gyms and Promotions

Many gyms don’t want a straight replica. They want their own belt with the WBC’s ring of flags around their gym’s name or logo.

It’s a smart fit for in house titles and fight nights. Fighters recognize the look, and the belt still belongs to your event.

We’ve built title belts for gyms and promotions in the UK, the USA, Australia, and Europe. To make one for your gym, start a custom belt design, and we’ll send you a design mockup before you pay anything. Here’s how our custom order process works, step by step.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is a WBC belt worth?

There’s no official price for a standard WBC belt, because the WBC doesn’t sell it. Special belts go much higher, and reports put the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao emerald belt at $1 million.

Signed replicas sell well too: one signed by Sugar Ray Leonard, Tommy Hearns, and Roberto Durán sold at auction for $1,516.80.

How heavy is a WBC belt?

The WBC doesn’t publish the official belt’s weight. The licensed Cleto Reyes replica weighs 5 lb (about 2.3 kg). Our full size WBC style replicas weigh 1.5 kg (3.3 lb) or more.

Is there an official WBC replica belt?

Yes. The WBC and Cleto Reyes make a licensed replica by hand in Mexico. Other WBC style replicas, including ours, are unlicensed.

How long does a WBC style replica take to arrive?

From our workshop, an in stock belt ships 4 to 6 days after you approve its photo and video. A custom belt takes 10 to 15 working days to make, plus 4 to 6 days to ship.
